Dupe war #1 – Makeup ForeverHD Microfinish Powder vs Silica Spheres

28 Mar

We love saving money, I mean, who doesn’t?  Especially if you can get a quality product that performs just as well as the expensive ones.

Original – Makeup Forever HD Microfinish Powder .3oz for $34

What it is:
Translucent finishing powder to be applied over foundation or worn alone.

What it does:
Finishing powder sets the foundation and slightly mattifies skin without changing its natural contours. Made of 100 percent-mineral silica, it softens the appearance of imperfections, fine lines, and pores and completely evens out the complexion for a glowing, radiant look. (i stole this text from

The Dupe:  Silica Powder Spheres from Coastal Scents 1oz for $3.75

What it is:
Translucent finishing powder to be applied over foundation or worn alone.

What it does (our review):

Coastal Scents Silica Powder Spheres or as we call them “Spheres” does exactly what the Makeup Forever HD powder does a fraction of the cost.

Hold on, let me do the math for you-

1oz of the brand name would cost you $106.67 whereas the 1oz Spheres costs $3.75.  I just saved you enough to get a really cute dress or some new shoes.   You can thank us later.

Ok, I know.  Silica Spheres as a name sounds terrifying.  “OMG, I am rubbing my face with cancer aids!!!” scary.  But seriously, its the same ingredients as the brand name, they just know how to market this kind of stuff better.  MakeUp Forever have argued that their spheres are smaller, thus making them sit on your face better.  I seriously can not tell a difference.

(as a side note, not all makeup is really all that safe for you and some contain toxins and carcinogens .  This is a great resource if you want to check out what you are putting on your skin-

Now that you are curious about Spheres you are gonna ask -“but will it dry me out?” “Will it make my face all white in flash photos and all my FB friends will all mock me for looking like Voldemort?”

Ladies, this doesn’t make you go all Dark Lord in photos (although if your foundation has SPF in it, that will.)

It does make your skin a bit dryer than normal if you use it everyday, I mean, it’s job is to absorb oils and hold your makeup in place.  What we recommend is using a bit stronger of a moisturizer if you see this happening.  What we do is add a tiny bit of our night cream to our makeup primer/moisturizer mixture.  (we will write about this combo soon, fear not!)

Overall, we highly recommend the spheres and we us it as part of our daily regimes to make sure we look like hot little bosses at all times. So go forth lovely ladies, don’t be ugly step sisters with smeared, faded or oily makeups.  Spheres 4 life.

Can I just say what a relief to find someone who actually knows what theyre talking about on the internet. You definitely know how to bring an issue to light and make it important. Question about the SPF…if it’s in my foundation it will react with the silica? What happens? I’ve always purchased moisturizers and foundations that have SPF in it. We’re told to use it daily for sun protection.

    What’s your best suggestion?

I’m allergic to SPF, so I don’t use a lot of products that contain it. Makeup Forever’s line of foundations are SPF free, but I’m not sure if that’s due to personal choice or not to alienate folks like me who are allergic.

My current foundation has a low SPF (8 I think) and i use it with the Silica Powder without problems.

3.75 compared to $34.00…Being an oily girl, I’m looking forward to trying something that will dry my skin. Thanks for sharing!

The stuff works great! I am still on my first container of it. They give you such a generous amount. Coastal Scents has great eyeshadows. I have the 88 Palette – its on sale for $8.88 right now. Totally worth it.
