Dupe war #2 – smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer vs Monistat Soothing Care Powder Gel

29 Mar

We know!  You want me to put WHAT on my face???  Trust…especially if you have any sort of sensitive skin or are prone to breakouts.

Original –  Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer 1 oz for $36

smashbox Pr

What it is:
Smashbox makeup artists use this product to create a perfect canvas for foundation application.

What it does:
According to Sephora, this is a silky blend of vitamins and antioxidants smoothes and perfects skin, while the unique formula helps to inhibit the destruction of collagen, and fills in fine lines and pores for a flawless finish.

The Dupe – Monistat Soothing Care Powder Gel 1.5 oz for $7.49

What it is:
Chafing Relief Powder-Gel® Skin Protectant

What it does (our review):

It coats and protects your skin, helps your foundation last longer, and it makes your skin really soft.  What came as a surprise was that it doesn’t break you out as smashbox sometimes can.  It’s a slightly lighter, less greasier formulation that the original.

How is it a dupe?  It has the some of the same ingredients as the original, active Dimethicone and non active Cyclopentasiloxane

Hold on, let me do the math for you-

1 oz of the brand name would cost you $36 whereas the 1.5 oz of the cream costs less than 8 Bucks.  Sometimes it can be on sale.  Hello Target!  Bam, now you can get a new eyeshadow from MAC.

We realize anything Monistat can bring out the giggles and possible sense of panic about putting it on your face, “OMG ewwwww!!!” Well, it did for us, but we are sometimes 12.  Also, calling it Monistat for the face was sort of embarrassing, especially in public.  So we started calling it V-Primer.

As always, this is a great resource if you want to check out what you are putting on your skin-

Tell me more, ” I can hear you begging.  “Is it weird?  Does it smell weird?  Does it feel weird?”  Well, not any weirder than most make-up.

It sort of smells like the original.  It feels almost exactly like the original on your hand and as you are applying it.  Keep in mind, this is a lighter formula than smashbox, so it doesn’t completely cover and cake you over.  It does layer very easily if you prefer more coverage and it also blends beautifully with your moisturizer or foundation to create your own custom BB cream.  Oh, and you’re welcome for that little nugget of information.

We touched on this in our Dupe War 1, and will expand soon

Overall, we highly recommend the V-Primer and we use it as part of our daily regimes to make sure we look like hot little bosses at all times.  Side note, neither of us used a primer every day before this.   Also, try to resist the urge to ask people to touch your face.  We can’t, but be better than us.

So go forth lovely ladies, don’t be ugly step sisters with uneven foundation and rough skin, V-Primer 4 life.

Hey superb blog! Does running a blog similar to this require a large amount of work?

I’ve virtually no understanding of programming but I had been hoping to start my own blog in the near future. Anyhow, if you have any suggestions or techniques for new blog owners please share. I understand this is off topic nevertheless I simply had to ask. Thank you!

You’re spot on about this! Excellent post…I must have come across this when you first posted it, because it looks awfully familiar and I’ve been using Monistat (Yeah, I said it!) on my face since spring. I still have leftover Smashbox sitting in the container (but why?!). Such a great, great dupe. People, “trust” as Your Fairy Godmother preaches! 😉

I think it’s way better than the name brand primers. I recently used Sephora’s version and I think it has been breaking me out. Love the Monistat!

So I use the “V-primer” and I love it! It works great! I told my friend about it and convinced her to buy it but she still thought I had finally lost it! But do worry, I showed her your article and she is excited to use it!
