September-ish empties 2018

8 Oct

It’s probably been about a year or more since I wrote an empties post.  When I started to think about getting back into blogging, I started collecting the empties here and there.  I’m sure there are a lot of items missing from here, but I tried to hang on to the products I wanted to talk about.  I’m also still debating whether to only include full size products or beauty box subscription products too.   I’m sure I will change my mind a 100 times.

So what did I use?   Fragrance?  Make up?  Hair?

I will probably say a little something about each of the products.   So left to right, we have:

Simple Eye Make Up Remover Pads – These are pretty great and really affordable at just under $7.00.  One pad removes almost all of stubborn eye make up.

Calvin Klein Beauty – This fragrance is really light and fruity/citrus.   It is really great for work and I would get a lot of compliments.

100% Pure Coffee Bean Caffeine Eye Cream – I buy this eye cream on and off and I still like it.

L’Oreal Elvive Total Repair Shampoo – I really like the Total Repair line.  I think it’s the best drug store shampoo and conditioner.

Viktor & Rolf Flowerbomb – this is my favorite go to evening and special occasion scent.

Simple Cleansing Wipes – My go to, I use them as a make-up remover and also as a cleanser in a pinch.

Caudalie Vinosource Moisturizing Sorbet – this was an okay moisturizer.  Not remarkable but not terrible.

Urban Decay All Nighter Setting Spray – one of the best setting sprays on the market, it just punches your wallet a little too much.

Dr. Jart+ Water Fuse – good product.  Recently reviewed on the site.

Dr. Brandt Microdermabrasion – One of Holy Grails.

DermaE Purifying Daily Detox Scrub – I really like this line and this was a good scrub.

Drybar Bay Breeze Shot – this didn’t wow me, that’s all.

Oribe Dry Texturizing Spray – I have no idea how to use these sprays so they are sort of lost on me.   I can’t even give an actual review 🙂  but, I didn’t end up with the feeling this product changed my life somehow.

Have you Lovelies tried any of these?  What did you think?  What were your Empties for September?  Link to your blog in the comments 🙂

How my hair color is holding up – an update post

5 Oct

It’s been a few weeks now since I changed my hair.  I’ve been using the Gemlites system.

So here is the side by side comparison:

Left is the brand new color – Right is yesterday

These were both taken outside, with natural light.  No filter.

So what do you guys think?  Is the color holding up?

I think it’s faded a bit and it’s less ruby and more red, but that’s okay.

Here is the post that lists the products we used during the coloring process, if you are interested.

Review – Celeb Luxury Gemlites hair care system

1 Oct

Celeb Luxury Gemlites hair care system is a salon brand of hair products.  You can buy this in salons and through authorized retailers.

What they claim:

Maintain brightness and bring out red tones and reflective facets in all bright and deep reds and brown hair

  • Instantly adds rich color while cleansing with hi-conditioning
  • Maintains, corrects, and boosts color brilliance
  • Continuous use after fresh color, adds color and stops visible washout and fade between
    color services
  • Alternate with shinewash® to manage color vibrancy
  • Complete gem lites® system restores hair to healthy, natural feel
  • Superior sulfate-free, paraben-free, ammonia-free, peroxide-free, PPD-free
  • No animal testing, 100% vegan

  • Blend of nourishing panthenol and phytantriol improves moisturization and texture of hair
  • Locks in intense moisture, hydrating hair even in low humidity to help prevent breakage

What it is –

It’s a system of a color deposing shampoo, an in-between shampoo and a conditioner.

Does it deposit color?

My overall impression of this product

I like it.  Biggest benefit is that I don’t have to play chemist in my bathroom to make my own color depositing product.  It works, it’s just a bit of work.  Here is my recipe for that in case you are looking for it.

The conditioner isn’t super moisturizing.  So if you have very dry hair, I’m not sure if this will be enough.  Also, because you are already leaving your shampoo on your head for a while, you are probably spending less time conditioning, like I am.  However, it doesn’t weight my hair down, it doesn’t make it frizzy.

What I really do like, is that the color shampoo makes my hair seem like it has highlights and depth.  Like my hair glitters in certain light.

How do you maintain your hair color?

Review – Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray

20 Sep

I really enjoy hair products, especially ones that fill my fantasies with thick and long hair.

Thickening hairspray, you say?  You had me at “thick”!

I think this was a Birchbox item. My apologies for not remembering.

Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray retails for $29.00 for 8 oz of product.  You can get a trial/travel size for $10.00 at Sephora.

From Sephora:

What it is:
A setting spray that offers a moderate hold for all hair types.

What it does:
This spray lifts and holds all hair types—thin, thick, straight, or curly. Use it for blow-drying, setting, protecting from heat, adding volume, lifting, controlling, and finishing any style. Pair this must-have formula with Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner for a little more heft.

My thoughts:

Does it work?

I spray this on my hair after I wash it at night.  What this does is give me more volume and bounce to my hair the next day.  I don’t think it lasts past 1 day of use.  It does fade out and you will need to reapply.  However, if you over use it too many days in a row it becomes sticky.  It did on my hair, at least.  My hair is thick/thin.  I have a full head of fine hair.

Would I re-purchase?

Yes, but not at the full size.  I think the trial size goes a long way, and I don’t use it very regularly.

Update to Review – Parlor Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray

22 Jun

Hello Lovelies!

I wanted to have proof of how awesome the Parlor Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray is.

All I did was scrunch my hair a bit.  My hair does have a natural wave, so it does wave and shape easily.

What I love about this spray is how bouncy the hair is after application.  All others used to leave my hair sort of gross.

Hope you try it!

Review-Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo

27 May

I owned this a few years ago.  I didn’t remember if I loved it or hated it, but I need some in a pinch and this was a travel size for cheap.

Oh, Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo, you are not great.

I’m relieved it was only $2.99 at my local CVS.

What do we expect from a dry shampoo in this day and age?  We expect it to not leave residue, we expect it to absorb some oil, we expect it to give your hair new life, to give it body, to make your hair look good.  With dry shampoo, you should be getting 2 or 3 days out of your hair before you need to shampoo. This may differ based on your location (if you are in Florida, this won’t work because I have been to Florida and child, IT IS HOT) and on your level of physical activity.

My thoughts on Not Your Mother’s Clean Freak Refreshing Dry Shampoo:

Pros –

It smells okay

It leaves residue. Not super white, like others can, but the particles sit on top of the hair.

It doesn’t really absorb oil.  I’m pretty sure this goes along with it leaving residue.  It doesn’t disappear because it doesn’t absorb oil.

It weighs down hair.  Major bummer.

I felt it made my hair look greasier than before I used it.  HUGE disappointment.  I ended up washing my hair immediately after spraying some at my roots.  Sort of defeated the purpose of it all together.

Will I repurchase?

No, not again. And if your mother is smart, she isn’t using this either.

Hair Extension Brand Review – Hotheads

23 May

Hair! Glorious Hair!

During my journey with hair extensions, I had two different hair brands on my head.  I decided to do a review on the hair for both brands, in case anyone is looking for feedback on the actual product

Please note – hair care for both brands is virtually the same.

1) be gentle

2) don’t yank or pull your hair too much

3) be careful with pulled back hair styles such as ponytails

4) don’t use shampoos or conditioners with sulfates or alcohol or oil

5) don’t blast your tapes with heat – it will melt your glue

6) listen to all advice your hair care professional will give you

Something else to keep in my mind, your hair will look different based on how your stylist installs them.  Everyone has a different technique on how they place the tapes on the head.  This is a large investment for you, so please pick a qualified stylist.  Also, be prepared to spend a lot of time in her/his chair because your maintenance appointments will run 2-3 hours depending on what other services you are having.  So, I hope you really like your stylist 🙂

Quick plug –  If you are in the Northwest Chicago/Suburban area, my friend Elyse did my extensions both times. She’s an amazing stylist and I would recommend her to anyone wanting awesome, funky, edgy, beautiful, and healthy hair. Here is her website.

On to the hair review –

In the picture above, I am wearing Hotheads Extensions.

Hotheads Pros

Hair Texture.  – Even though this hair was slightly frizzy, I liked it because it was a perfect match for my own slightly frizzy hair.  One of my favorite ways of wearing these extensions was just wash and go.  They dried in waves and blended perfectly with my own waves.  Overall, I thought it felt finer and softer than Babe brand I had later (that review will be posted soon)

Stylability – I found these extensions held a curl a lot longer and curled better.  My curls were much tighter and would last 3 days with minimal fuss in the mornings.

Hotheads Cons

Color deposit on the hair – Even though we color matched and dyed the extension to match my hair color, the extensions had a slightly pinkier shade than my own hair.

Shedding – Wow, these things shed SO MUCH.  I clogged so many drains, Drano loved me.  There was long red hair all over the house, it was rather annoying.  Also, with so much shedding, the thickness of my hair was visibly affected.  After about 3 months, my hair looked much thinner.

Knot creation on hair at tapes – this goes along with the shedding, the hair tangles around itself, causing knots.  Knots all the time.

Hair appearance start to finish – When it was time to replace this hair, you could really tell.  The bottom of my hair was really scraggly.  It looked DONE.

Would I get this brand again?

Maybe, especially if they fixed the shedding problem.  I’m saying this because I happen to like the hair texture since it matched my hair.  If you are pretty smooth hair, you would be screaming in frustration with these.

I hope I preemptively answered any questions you lovelies may have.  If you are looking for a review on the extension experience itself, click here.

Dry Shampoo Review – Style Sexy Hair H₂No 3 Day Style Saver Dry Shampoo – the BEST!!!

9 Oct

Style Sexy Hair H₂No 3 Day Style Saver Dry Shampoo changed my hair habits.

Hands down, this is the best Dry Shampoo on the market.  Especially if you have any other color of hair other than blonde.

So what’s the big deal, you ask?

From their website “A translucent light and layerable dry shampoo that helps keep blowouts looking fresh for 3 days. This dry shampoo will provide shine and prolong the time between shampoos, resulting in color vibrancy and reduction of chemical damage to the hair.”

Key word – TRANSLUCENT.  Ladies, this disappears into your hair.  Red hair?  No problem! Purple hair?  No biggie! Pink, orange, green, and oh brunette and black hair….NO PROBLEM.

There is no residue.  Let that sink in…No white stuff left on your roots.

It doesn’t make your hair dull or drab.  Doesn’t weight it down.

This dry shampoo will set you back just under $20.00. But it is seriously worth it.  Also, I feel like I use less of it than the others.

So why don’t you have this yet?
