Review – All Natural Deodorant by NorthCoast Organics

4 Dec

Winter is a great time to switch to an all natural deodorant. I know this can seem scary (and stinky) but regular deodorants/antiperspirants have not so healthy ingredients in them. There are products out there that actually work at de-stinky you, it’s just a matter of finding one that works with your body’s chemistry. It’s also good to have a close enough friend who will tell you if you stink.

I personally use Death By Lavender from NorthCoast Organics. Look how cute this is!

The skull is totally why I tried it, not gonna lie.  “An elite assassin of odor you can trust.”

Their line of deodorants include three scents: Revolver [Cedarwood, Cypress and Clary Sage], Naked [unscented] and Death By Lavender [lavender, duh]. All three scents are totally unisex, although Revolver seems to be the most masculine.

Does it work? Will i smell?

First things first, I think it smells amazing! I am super biased though because I love lavender scented things. Revolver also smells great, very natural and kind of woodsy.

The deodorant lasts me all day and keeps me smelling fresh. I will admit, I don’t use it on the weekends if I know i’m going to be at a hot club or dancing around, I am just not that brave. Those nights I use regular, nasty ole Secret.

Remember, this is an deodorant not an antiperspirant so you will sweat a little. Although, since baking soda and corn starch are the main ingredients, it does absorb a good amount of the pit moisture. I even wear it working out and don’t find my pits to sloppy.

As I said before, everyone is different.

The one main draw back to this product is that it doesn’t glide on as softly as regular deodorants and I have heard complaints about it causing some irritation for some people as a result of that.

Where can I buy it?

I found it at Whole Foods. They also sell travel sized so you can try it out, or keep one in your purse or gym bag.

You can also find it online directly from the Chicago-based company: CLICK HERE

You can also click here to see the list of other retailers in your area.

Cold Weather Gear!

6 Jan

While on the topic of the insane winter chill occurring in Chicago-

In November I was traveling in NYC and stopped by the Uniqlo store in Soho.  Uniqlo makes some of the BEST cold weather gear – at affordable prices.

Their HeatTech line is excellent for creating a base layer when dealing with extreme weather.  I have a couple tank tops, leggings and tights and I have been living in them this winter.

Image

The fabric is moisture wicking and retains body heat.  I guess the oils they weave into the fibers actually work with your own perspiration to help warm you.  Sounds expensive right?  Nope.   The socks are amazing.  They work almost as well as my incredibly thick SmartWool socks and feel like any normal, thin crew sock.  It’s space age magic!

The Heattech leggings and tights are thin.  The leggings are see-thru so don’t expect them to cover your bum.  They are SUPER soft and cozy.  Great for wearing under pants or under skirts.

Thanks to Uniqlo, I now own the best leggings I have ever owned (aside from Black Milk, but that’s Apples to Oranges.) The Uniqlo Legging Pants are freaking amazing.  They look like jeans, but you can go to an all-you-can-eat Brazilian Steak House and still be comfortable wearing them after gorging yourself.  Trust me.  I know things.  Also, they are under $20.Image

Product I Can’t Live Without in Winter…but wish I could.

12 Dec

Chicago is freaking FREEZING right now.  Which means everyone’s heat is set to “Tropical” and means my poor skin is super dry.

Like as in, so dry that I’m super itchy and am scratching myself raw while sleeping.  No lotion I own is helping and its been over a week.  So this means it’s that time of the year that I make my trip to the LUSH store.  Woe is me.  😛

The only thing that has ever helped me survive Winter is Ro’s Argan Body Conditioner.  It smells amazing (like roses) and it seriously makes my skin feel amazing and stops all the itching.  The problem – it’s $33 a 7.9oz Tub.  [LUSH has free shipping on everything until the end of the day, so act fast.]

Image

Here is the story:  LUSH product inventor Rowena made this decadent, rose-scented shower ‘lotion’. She noticed how much she liked the sultry soft feeling hair conditioner gives her hair, so she thought how nice it would be if she could have the same feeling for the body too. With scoops of cocoa butter, cupuacu butter, almond oil and Argan oils, and the fragrant scent of fresh rose petals, this is the most luxurious body softener that ever was (if we don’t say so ourselves!). After washing up, slather yourself all over with this new invention. Rinse, pat dry and revel in supremely soft, rose-scented skin.

An amazing way to use this product is to slather yourself with it before you take a bath and just soak away while it repairs your skin.

You can also use it to shave with…if you are rich.

What are your go-to Winter products?

Style Guide – Hat Head!

14 Nov

We live in Chicago and this week has been so cold!  WINTER IS COMING.

Winter is a great time to grow out our hair and to train your hair to not need to be washed so frequently because you can wear hats!

I have often avoided hats because I feel like they aren’t cute but last year I embraced wearing hats!  Just find a few you love and you will thank me later.  For great, cheap hats try Target or H&m.

Pro tip: if you need to take your hat off (work, restaurant, etc) I recommend keeping dry shampoo on had to help make it look less dirty and less frizzy.  Also, wearing a braided style can help make you look done-up with minimal effort.

Here are some cute styling idea:

chunky knit slouchy beanie with loose waves.

Straight with volume and a statement hat.  Warm and cute!

Beanie, Blazer and waves!  Chic!

Slouchy beanie with side braid.  This would look fabulous with a fishtail braid!

Beret with side braid.  Would look cute with pigtail braids!

Cheap Discovery – ChapStick Hydration Lock

12 Oct

We live in Chicago so we know a thing or two about chapped/dry lips.  My normal go-to is either Blistex Complete Moisture or anything Burts Bee’s and Vaseline at night.  Seriously, I swear by Vaseline and keep a tiny little tub of it in my purse at all times.

Image

But I have something new that I like ALMOST as much as I like Vaseline – ChapStick Hydration Lock!

Image

It feels great, “tastes” great – a lovely Vanilla and acts as a lip primer for lipstick.  All of this for a $2.99 price tag.

ExuisiteOil Protective Treatment by Biolage Matrix

My friend got me this as a “thanks for cleaning up my cats’ poop while I am away on a fantastic vacation and you are stuck in ugly Chicago weather”.

I haven’t used it yet.  It doubles as a treatment and a shine enhancer.  Intrigue!!!!

From Matrix:

  • Mix with your shampoo and conditioner for maximum brilliance
  • Use for a massage before shampooing like an oil for a special treatment
  • Smooth on dry lengths and ends for immediate luster
  • Use on face-framing pieces for simple control and manageability
  • Leave on extra-dry ends overnight for a non-greasy treatment
  • Ultimate styling aid for blow dryer or flat iron
  • Add to any treatment for added brilliance, softness and manageability

My hair is crazy dry in the winter, so I’m looking forward to using this is a treatment then.  But I am thinking this may be amazing to add shine on no wash days.  That is, once I start wearing my hair down again.  Right now, it’s tucked into a headband almost every day because growing out your hair from a bob is the absolute worst.

Have you lovelies tried this?  Thoughts????

Aquage – gonna give these a try

5 Jun

I just got back from getting my hair cut – just a trim as I’m trying to grow this mane out.

My stylist recommend these two products for me:

Image

“Look at my sweet Jeggings!”

Aquage Beyond Body Thermal Spray is like a 3 in one dealy – its protects against heat, makes your hair shinny and acts like a hairspray.  It also makes your hair look and even feel thicker.  It’s awesome for waves!  I only just used it today so I really don’t feel confident to review it just yet (stay tuned for that)  but you can read other people’s reviews HERE.

Aquage Silkening Oil Treatment is for before you blow-dry your hair.  It helps protect against frizz but also speeds up your blow-dry time so you do less damage AND it protects your color.  AMAZING.  I call it the Magic Sauce.  I have only just used it today but here are other people’s reviews on MakeUp Alley.

I will get back to you guys on my experiences with these products.  I do like the way they smell – just like natural clean smells and kind of oceanie.  You can find them by using their Salon Locator.  Only indie salons carry it, so you can’t find it at Ulta.

Here is what my hair looks like so you can get an idea of how these products work for curls.

btw- I go to Orbit Salon in Wicker Park to my homegirl Samantha.
