Review – L’Occitane Shea Butter Ultra Rich Lip Balm

3 Jun

Last Christmas, I bought the L’Occitane Advent Calendar and discovered some wonderful products from the line.  I was already a fan of their lotions and body butters, so learning about other items in their collection was fun.

One thing I fell in love with was the L’Occitane Shea Butter Ultra Rich Lip Balm.

Loccitane Lip Balm

From L’Occitane:

Enriched with fair trade Shea Butter (10%), this Moisturizing Certified Organic* Shea Lip Balm helps to moisturize, nourish and protect dry lips. The comfort, suppleness and softness of your lips will be fully restored.

*Natural and Organic Cosmetic certified by Ecocert Greenlife according to Ecocert
standard available at http://cosmetics.ecocert.com. Fair Trade approved by ECOCERT Environnement according to the ESR standards available at http://www.ecocert.com

100% of the total ingredients are from natural origin

55% of the total ingredients are from Organic Farming

10% of the total ingredients come from fair trade

My Thoughts

First thing I noticed was that signature L’Occitane scent.  I really love it, so I was thrilled this was scented with it.  I was mildly concerned it would be a weird scent/taste.

So, whew!  The first concern eliminated immediately!

Second thing, this felt so nice on my lips!  It’s not greasy or oily.  It’s just slightly slick. It feels nice and comforting.  I use it before bed because it just sort of sets the mood for relaxation for me.

Will I purchase this?

Yes.  It’s one of my favorite things and I use it almost daily.

Is it moisturizing?

Yes, my lips never got chapped when I was using this.

Have you guys used the L’Occitane Shea Butter Ultra Rich Lip Balm?  Are you a fan of L’Occitane?

Advice From an Expert – Special Guest Post and Special Deal for Chicago!

12 Dec

We are trying new ideas here on Fairy Godmother and one of the ideas we are considering is Advice from an Expert.

For our debut, I asked my friend Beth who is a cosmetician and owns her own med spa. Yes, home girl has skills.  She is also responsible for keeping my almost 40 year old face looking like a hot little boss.

I asked Beth for skin care advice during the Winter months.

It is important to moisturize your face no matter the time of year, but it is imperative during the winter months. If you already have dry skin, you should up the amount of times you apply per day, but the key here is to not skip over your neck and chest.

Keep your skin moisturized: Choose a good, oil-based moisturizer to keep the skin moisturized and soft. Pay special attention to the exposed parts (and the most affected areas) like your hands, nails, feet and lips. Keep them well moisturized at all times.  Even those who have oily skin must use light moisturizing lotions after cleansing to keep the skin healthy and helps maintains the pH Balance. It is important to use a mild facial cleanser and wash with lukewarm water, hot water can strip your skin of its essential oils and your skin can become too dry and irritated. Make sure to exfoliate at least 2-3 times per week this will help promote skin cell turnover and also allow for better product penetration.
Use a good sunscreen: People like to enjoy the sun during winters but little do they know that exposure to the sun can harm their skin in winter too. Use a sunscreen of SPF 30 or more and make sure that it contains Zinc.  In fact, it should be a part of your daily routine throughout the year. Don’t say goodbye to your sunscreen just because summer is over
Do not lick your lips: Winter is the season of chapped lips and licking them will make them more chapped. Use a good lip balm to keep your lips soft and protected. Lip balm with Vit E works well.
For Chicago area folks, Beth is offering a special on Microdermabrasion.  I get this, and I swear by it.  Yeah, you may looked a bit jacked up the next day, but Honeypie, by day 3 you are amazing.
Package of 3 Microdermabrasion Treatments Plus Basic Facial
Only 165.00 through January
Package must be bought by January 30th to get this offer. The regular price for this package is 255.00. Please mention, print out, or display this email to redeem.

We hope you Lovelies enjoyed this!  We hope to have more Advice from an Expert on here soon.

Dupe War 10: Clinique Almost Lipstick in Black Honey vs Cover Girl Lipgloss in Daring

15 Oct

Black Honey has a cult like following since its release years ago.  It’s a great product!  Very universal, easy to apply, easy to wear.  I haven’t met a girl who didn’t look great in Black Honey

Almost Lipstick

Black Honey Clinique $15.00

But I think I found a pretty good dupe from Cover Girl

COVERGIRL LipSlicks Lipgloss

This is the Cover Girl Lipslicks Lipgloss line in Daring $5.99

See for yourself:

2013-10-15 09.10.59

Black Honey on the left Daring on the right

The Cover Girl version is slightly less pigmented on the initial application.  However, this doesn’t seem to be the problem when you run it over your lips a few times.

Check it:

Clinique

Clinique’s Black Honey

CoverGirl

Cover Girl’s Daring

Verdict:

Is there really a difference??? Other than in price?

If you are on a budget, and don’t want to shell out $15.00, save your wallet and go for the Cover Girl version.  You won’t be disappointed.

The Math:

Save yourself $10.00.  Buy more makeup.

Review: Cailyn Cosmetics Tinted Lip Balm

14 Oct

September Ipsy Glam Bag brought to me Cailyn Cosmetics Tinted Lip Balm in Big Apple.  This is a delicious true red.

20131013_185741 2013-10-13 19.02.01

I wore it without lip liner to keep the color true for the pic.

This is not the most moisturizing and I think the name “balm” is a bit misleading, but it is long lasting.

It may be less drying if worn over a lip balm.

I will say, I’m officially IN LOVE with Cailyn.  And Ipsy for continuously feeding my addiction.

Cheap Discovery – ChapStick Hydration Lock

12 Oct

We live in Chicago so we know a thing or two about chapped/dry lips.  My normal go-to is either Blistex Complete Moisture or anything Burts Bee’s and Vaseline at night.  Seriously, I swear by Vaseline and keep a tiny little tub of it in my purse at all times.

Image

But I have something new that I like ALMOST as much as I like Vaseline – ChapStick Hydration Lock!

Image

It feels great, “tastes” great – a lovely Vanilla and acts as a lip primer for lipstick.  All of this for a $2.99 price tag.

Review: Revlon Colorstay Just Bitten Lipstain + Balm

1 Oct

I bought the Revlon Colorstay Just Bitten Lipstain + Balm last year.  It has sat in my make up collection for over a year.  I wan’t really feeling it when I got it.  This year I brought it out because I wanted daytime red lips.  A stain is so much easier to pull off in the day even in  a dark, bold color.

JUST BITTEN Lipstain & Balm

I have the color “gothic”…because well…duh

2013-10-01 09.10.12

2013-10-01 09.09.15

It comes out in a nice berry stain.  The lip balm on the other side is nice because stains can be drying.  Of course, I broke mine, so my lips are dry.  As seen above.

The staying power is decent, and it’s cheap!  Around $8.00 USD and you can catch it on sale for around $5.00 USD.

If you have never worn a stain before, and don’t want to shell out major $$ for Benetint, this is a good stepping stone.

PLUS they have a million colors.

Are you a fan of lip stains?

11 Sep

2013-09-11 08.59.55

I’m happy I finally got around to blogging about August because my Ipsy  September Glam Bag arrived yesterday….unexpectedly!  I didn’t think it would be shipped until next week since I didn’t get an option of a Sneak Peek this month.

So BONUS!  It was like a true surprise.  I had no idea what to expect.  Zero.  Zilch.  Nada.

The bag is awesome!!!!  And I love LOVE the makeup bag this month.  It’s going in my purse tonight.  Bam.

What I got:

Elizabeth Mott Mascara sample

Cailyn Lip Balm in Big Apple.  (I can’t wait to try this, the color is so gorgeous in the bottle)

Nyx eye shadow

Starlooks eyeliner in Obsidian

I’m really psyched for the lip balm.  I have Cailyn gel liner, and I’m so happy with the quality.  I expect nothing less from this.

Reviews of all products will happen!

What did you get in your Ipsy bag???

Lips – Top Picks

10 Sep

Not going to lie but I am kind of a lipstick noob.   I didn’t really wear it until this year (aside from a bad stint in high school when I though dark / black lips were cute on me.)

After experimenting, reading reviews, spending a bunch of cash.  I have decided these are my favorites:

LUSH – Lipstick $18.95: Highly pigmented, cute colors and they go out of the way to help you find your perfect shade at the Lush Store. It also has jojoba oil and rose wax to help moisturize your lips.

Image

Stila – Stay All Day lipstick $22: I received a sample of this in my August Birchbox and I just love it.  Has staying power and feels weightless.  The red shade (Beso) I have is perfect!

Image

MAC- Lipstick $15: A cult classic for a reason.  They have so many shades, so you will certainly find yours.  The staying power isn’t as good as the two previous liquid lipsticks but I still love it.  (especially their reds and pinks).

Image

NYX Matte Lipstick $6:  My go-to drugstore lipstick.  I love the matte finish and $6 is freaking cheap.
