Growing out hair and how to not look lame

4 Jan

I’m growing out my hair again, because I seem to have developed commitment issues with hair length.  Short, Long, Extensions, Go crazy and cut it off.

Here are some fun hair dos I found, including my own braid headband!

Review – Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray

20 Sep

I really enjoy hair products, especially ones that fill my fantasies with thick and long hair.

Thickening hairspray, you say?  You had me at “thick”!

I think this was a Birchbox item. My apologies for not remembering.

img_3332

Bumble and Bumble Thickening Hairspray retails for $29.00 for 8 oz of product.  You can get a trial/travel size for $10.00 at Sephora.

From Sephora:

What it is:
A setting spray that offers a moderate hold for all hair types.

What it does:
This spray lifts and holds all hair types—thin, thick, straight, or curly. Use it for blow-drying, setting, protecting from heat, adding volume, lifting, controlling, and finishing any style. Pair this must-have formula with Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner for a little more heft.

My thoughts:

Does it work?

I spray this on my hair after I wash it at night.  What this does is give me more volume and bounce to my hair the next day.  I don’t think it lasts past 1 day of use.  It does fade out and you will need to reapply.  However, if you over use it too many days in a row it becomes sticky.  It did on my hair, at least.  My hair is thick/thin.  I have a full head of fine hair.

Would I re-purchase?

Yes, but not at the full size.  I think the trial size goes a long way, and I don’t use it very regularly.

Thanks for reading!

Hair Extension Brand Review – Babe Hair Extensions

8 Jun

My last set of extensions, and the ones that are still waiting for me to put back in my hair, were Babe Brand.  Babe is based in Salt Lake City, Utah.

IMG_2354

Once again, a reminder:

Please note – hair care for both brands is virtually the same.

1) be gentle

2) don’t yank or pull your hair too much

3) be careful with pulled back hair styles such as ponytails

4) don’t use shampoos or conditioners with sulfates or alcohol or oil

5) don’t blast your tapes with heat – it will melt your glue

6) listen to all advice your hair care professional will give you

Another Quick plug –  If you are in the Northwest Chicago/Suburban area, my friend Elyse did my extensions both times. She’s an amazing stylist and I would recommend her to anyone wanting awesome, funky, edgy, beautiful, and healthy hair. Here is her website.

Hair Review

Babe Pros

Hair texture – although I liked the texture of the Hotheads because it matched my frizzy hair, the Babe hair feels a lot better.  It’s smoother and the individual strands feel thicker. It’s less frizzy and lays more straight than wavy.

No shedding – I didn’t have long red strands all over the house, shower drain, towels, sink.  It was great.

No knots – I didn’t get the weird mess of knots around the wefts.

Length – the Babe length is slightly longer and I really liked that.

Overall appearance – Babe just looks better.  Shinier, thicker, healthier looking hair

Overall daily maintenance – Because these didn’t shed or knot or get tangled as the Hotheads, I didn’t need to spend as much time daily baby-ing them.  It was nice not to brush gingerly and try to get tangles out.

babe Extensions

Babe Cons

Stylability – I didn’t think these held a curl as well.  I felt the curls didn’t get as tight and lost their bounce quicker.

Would I get this brand again?

Most likely yes, even if I didn’t have hair still waiting for me.  These looked better day to day, I was much happier with Babe than without.

Also, on the last photo we did a color melt/smudge to get rid of the root mark.  I love love love this trend.

I hope I covered everything!  I linked to the Hotheads review on top as well so you can read both if you are interested.

Review – Parlor Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray

2 Jun

Happy Thursday, Lovelies!  I always really enjoy reviewing hair care products.  And I enjoy receiving hair care products to review!  I got the Parlor Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray in my April Birchbox.

IMG_3269

My first reaction at receiving a sea salt spray was bored disappointment.  I have never used one that I absolutely love.  I use it and it seems good the first time, and then it ends up fading my hair color or drying my hair or it gets greasy.  (what’s up with that?)

So I wasn’t excited about Parlor Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray.  But I tried it.

My first time, I LOVED it.  I had used it just after I took out my extensions and loved the waves this created in my hair.   Here’s is some background on the product before I dive into my thoughts.

From the Parlor website:

INSPIRATION

Part beach wave spray, part leave-in conditioner, this formula gives hair that covetable surfer-girl texture without the drying effects of salt water.

BEST FOR

All hair types

BENEFITS

Adds volume and creates perfectly undone, beachy waves without drying out your hair.

KEY INGREDIENTS

Sweet almond extract – protects hair fibers and infuses softness, volume, and brilliance into weak or damaged hair.

Algae extract – helps rebalance the scalp’s moisture content while protecting, stimulating, and nourishing the scalp with vitamins.

DIRECTIONS

Spray evenly on damp or dry hair and style with your fingers. For increased hold, diffuse with hair dryer.

Did it deliver what it promised?

Yes, my waves were more formed and bigger (I do have a natural wave in my hair).  My hair was shiny and soft not crunchy.  My hair looked pretty.  And all I did was spray this on and scrunch it up.

Bonus use

If you don’t wash your hair daily, this also works to hold your second day style.  I curled my hair the second day after I used it (many times) and it consistently keeps my hair styled and the curl last longer.

One thing I disliked about other sea salt sprays was that it was pretty much impossible to make my hair look good the day after.  It would be either stringy or frizzy.  Sometimes both. Uncute.

Would I purchase full size?

Yes!  It retails for $24.00 which is not the cheapest styling product but it’s also not the most expensive.  Also, you don’t drench your hair with this, so it does last a while.  I’m still using my Bichbox sample size and we are already in June.

Have you guys used  Parlor Moisturizing Sea Salt Spray?  What did you think?

Hair Extension Brand Review – Hotheads

23 May

Hotheads

Hair! Glorious Hair!

image

During my journey with hair extensions, I had two different hair brands on my head.  I decided to do a review on the hair for both brands, in case anyone is looking for feedback on the actual product

Something else to keep in my mind, your hair will look different based on how your stylist installs them.  Everyone has a different technique on how they place the tapes on the head.  This is a large investment for you, so please pick a qualified stylist.  Also, be prepared to spend a lot of time in her/his chair because your maintenance appointments will run 2-3 hours depending on what other services you are having.  So, I hope you really like your stylist 🙂

Quick plug –  If you are in the Northwest Chicago/Suburban area, my friend Elyse did my extensions both times. She’s an amazing stylist and I would recommend her to anyone wanting awesome, funky, edgy, beautiful, and healthy hair. Here is her website.

On to the hair review –

In the picture above, I am wearing Hotheads Extensions.

Hotheads Pros

Hair Texture.  – Even though this hair was slightly frizzy, I liked it because it was a perfect match for my own slightly frizzy hair.  One of my favorite ways of wearing these extensions was just wash and go.  They dried in waves and blended perfectly with my own waves.  Overall, I thought it felt finer and softer than Babe brand I had later (that review will be posted soon)

Stylability – I found these extensions held a curl a lot longer and curled better.  My curls were much tighter and would last 3 days with minimal fuss in the mornings.

Hotheads Cons

Color deposit on the hair – Even though we color matched and dyed the extension to match my hair color, the extensions had a slightly pinkier shade than my own hair.

Shedding – Wow, these things shed SO MUCH.  I clogged so many drains, Drano loved me.  There was long red hair all over the house, it was rather annoying.  Also, with so much shedding, the thickness of my hair was visibly affected.  After about 3 months, my hair looked much thinner.

Knot creation on hair at tapes – this goes along with the shedding, the hair tangles around itself, causing knots.  Knots all the time.

Hair appearance start to finish – When it was time to replace this hair, you could really tell.  The bottom of my hair was really scraggly.  It looked DONE.

Would I get this brand again?

Maybe, especially if they fixed the shedding problem.  I’m saying this because I happen to like the hair texture since it matched my hair.  If you are pretty smooth hair, you would be screaming in frustration with these.

I hope I preemptively answered any questions you lovelies may have.  If you are looking for a review on the extension experience itself, click here.

My thoughts
I thought this was the most shine boosting leave-in I’ve used to date.
Tames frizz for a few days.
Lightweight.  It’s like air
I like the fragrance.  It made my hair smell nice for a full day.
I don’t think this is the best for detangling, so brush hair slowly to prevent breakage when it’s wet.
Doesn’t strip my color!

My thoughts
I honestly don’t see much difference between these two products.
I do think this was is slightly better for detangling.
I love the fragrance.
The Miracle 12 is more a treatment than just a leave-in or detangler, so on that basis I like that product better.
You can buy these on Amazon, Ulta, and beauty salons, Walgreens.  These run about $16.00 for a full size 5.1 Fl Oz.
Will I repurchase?
Of course!
Have you tried the Matrix Total Results line?  Do you have a favorite leave-in conditioner?
