Switching to a natural deodorant – how not to smell like a barn animal

9 Oct

Natural deodorants are a hot topic and have been for a few years.  Some people think that antiperspirants containing aluminum are linked to breast cancer.  Some people think it’s not natural to prevent sweating since your body is intended to sweat.  Some people just like cruelty free products.

I also know, a lot of women are afraid of making the switch from something they have used most of their lives.  They are afraid they will smell, and that product will fail, that it will be embarrassing.

Here’s the deal, switching from an antiperspirant to a natural deodorant can be tough.  Your body is not used to sweating under your arms.  This will create some armpit drama.

Here are my tips from switching to a natural deodorant:

1) Try a few kinds of brands and scents –

The market is full of different brands and kinds of deodorants.  The most well known are probably Jason, Tom’s of Maine, and Crystal Body.  These are available at your local grocery store or health food store.  If these don’t work, venture onward!

Crystal® Body Deodorant Stick

There are also a slew of natural/vegan deodorants on Etsy!  The plus side of buying on Etsy is that a lot of vendors offer samples for a reduced price.  This way you can try many different brands and scents to really find the perfect fit.  Not all brands will react well with your body chemistry, this is okay.

Pro-tip: You want to find a deodorant that neutralizes odor and bacteria.

My favorite is this:

Laundry Day - Vegan Deodorant Stick 2.5oz

It’s from a vendor called RachelRene. I love the formula because it works really well with my body chemisty.  I LOVE LOVE LOVE the Laundry Day scent.  It reminds me of fabric softner.  Smells so fresh and so clean clean.

I’m not a fan of having my under arms smell like food or perfumes 🙂  But if this is your thing, go with it.  RachelRene has a scent for every nose!

2) Put it to the test!

When I say, test, I mean that.  YOU NEED TO SWEAT.  Put some on and go work out, hard core.  You need to be able to mimic the environment you will be facing next summer.  SWEAT.  Then sweat more.  You go to the gym? Wear it there!

Want to know where I tested mine?  Dance class!  Two hours of ballet and jazz baby!  Did I smell? yeah, sometimes…BUT SO WHAT?  People sweat.  It’s what we do.

Keep in mind- after getting off antiperspirant,  your under arms will suddenly realize they can produce sweat.  AND THEY WILL….a lot.  That’s okay.  You are probably not used to sweating there, and you may feel weird or ashamed.  Don’t!  People sweat…it is natural to sweat.

EVENTUALLY you will sweat a lot less.  And actually, you may find you sweat less overall.  This is what happened to me and 2 of my friends when we switched.  Yes, we compared “pit notes”.

3) Figure out what works for you.

You may be a person who needs to reapply throughout the day for a while, this is okay.

This is a process, it probably won’t be super quick, but you should be able to be comfortable with it in 2 or 3 weeks.  Sooner, if you find the deodorant that works great with you right away.

Have you tried switching to a natural deodorant?
